Attracting Hummingbirds with Landscaping Plants

One of the most rewarding aspects of great landscaping is its living nature. Even the most magnificent painting cannot evolve and change with time and the seasons. The most awe-inspiriting sculpture will never be a complicated living ecosystem. Landscapes provide something that other art forms can usually isolate but can rarely nurture—life.

A perfect example of this is the way one can use the right landscaping plants to send out a natural invitation to a remarkable animal, the hummingbird. These tiny, fast-flapping creatures are beautiful living additions to a landscape and they are willing to become a part of it when the right landscaping plants are put before them. Those who would like to add hummingbirds to their regular landscape can do so by selecting the right plants.

What kind of landscaping plants do hummingbirds appreciate the most? Although hummingbirds can be attracted to a great variety of flowers, they seem to have a particular love for red blossoms. Landscaping plants offering red flowers are more likely to have hummingbird visitors than are those with blooms in other hues.

Hummingbirds are also very appreciative of nectar. Flowers rich in nectar are a wonderful landscaping plant choice if one is interested in bring the remarkable tiny birds into the picture. Hummingbirds feed on the nectar present in flowers and plants, so they use of flowers very rich in nectar is a great way of adding hummingbirds to a landscape.

When we discuss the flowers found attractive by hummingbirds, it does not mean we are limiting the selection of landscaping plants to flowers alone. Other flowering plants can also bring the birds. Vines and shrubs such as trumpet vine, butterfly bush and Rose of Sharon have been demonstrated to attract hummingbirds, too. There are a variety of landscaping plants that can do the trick.

Of course, one needs to rely exclusively on landscaping plants to attract hummingbirds. Many fans of the tiny birds rely on specially constructed hummingbird feeders, which provide the equivalent of desirable rich nectar to the birds. Landscaping plants may be a more authentic means of bringing in hummingbirds, but an attractive feeder can be an effective supplement.

If one wants to add the hummingbird to their landscape, they can do so. By choosing the right flowers and flowering vines and bushes as primary landscaping plants one can create a habitat that is irresistible to hummingbirds.
